There are lots of conflicting information about soy out there. But hormones experts all agree on this: soy should be preferably avoided, and fermented soy eaten in moderation (1-2 times a week).

Why?

Not all types of soy products are good. In fact, if you are trying to conceive, only FERMENTED soy is good for you. Non fermented soy products contain a high amount of phytic acid, which blocks the absorption of nutrients and can cause indigestion. It can also depress thyroid function.

One more thing to note is that soy contains isoflavones, which are organic compounds that acts as phytoestrogen (i.e. mimic estrogen). This can be helpful for menopausal women or women wanting to avoid breast cancer, but are definitely a no go for women trying to conceive.

What type of soy products should you eat?

Fermented soy products. These include tempeh and miso.

Tempeh is a great vegetarian protein source. It contains manganese and copper, which are co-factors for antioxidants. It contains riboflavin (B2) which helps increase energy levels. It is high in fiber and can help lower cholesterol.
